Why is my AUD balance showing as negative?
We understand that seeing a negative balance can be unexpected and concerning. This typically occurs due to how card payments are processed by merchants and does not necessarily indicate an error with your account.
Below are the two most common reasons this may occur:
-
The final charge was higher than the initial hold
When you make a card payment, merchants often place a temporary hold on your funds to ensure there’s enough balance available. If the final amount charged is higher than this initial hold, it may exceed your available balance and cause it to appear negative.
This commonly happens when the total cost isn’t known upfront, such as:
Public transport
A small holding amount may be charged when you tap on. The full fare is calculated and charged only after your journey ends.Taxis and ride-hailing services
The final amount may increase due to tolls, tips, or route changes.Hotels
Hotels typically place a temporary hold at check-in to cover potential additional charges (for example, room service or incidental costs). The final amount is settled at check-out. If this final charge is higher than the initial hold, it may result in a negative balance. -
It could be a delayed payment
Sometimes, a merchant may not finalise a transaction immediately. If the payment is processed a few days later and you’ve already spent the remaining funds in your wallet, this delayed charge may cause your balance to temporarily go below zero.
How do we handle these transactions?
To help minimise negative balances, we follow the steps below when a charge is processed:
We will first deduct the amount from your wallet in the same currency
If you have enough funds in the relevant currency wallet, the transaction will be completed from there. We use available funds from your other currency wallets if needed
If there aren’t enough funds in the same currency, we’ll automatically convert available balances from your other currency wallets to help cover the charge.Any remaining shortfall is shown as a negative balance
If there’s still not enough balance after checking all your currency wallets, the remaining amount will be reflected as a negative balance in your AUD wallet.
What should I do next?
Simply top up your AUD wallet to clear the negative balance. Once your balance is positive again, you can continue transacting as usual.
If you don’t recognise a transaction or believe an amount is incorrect, please review your transaction history in the app and contact our Customer Experience team at customer.au@you.co.
