Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) is a feature offered by some ATMs and card terminals overseas. It gives you the option to be charged in your home currency instead of the local currency of the country you’re in.
While it might sound convenient, DCC often comes with unfavourable exchange rates and extra processing fees, usually between 2% and 3%. These costs are set by the payment processor or ATM network, not by YouTrip.
When withdrawing cash overseas
An ATM might ask whether you’d like to be billed in AUD instead of the local currency.
For example, a UK ATM may offer to charge you in AUD even though you’re withdrawing GBP.
To get the best exchange rate, always choose to be charged in the local currency of the country you’re in.
When shopping online
Before completing your payment, make sure you’ve selected the correct payment currency on the website or app.
If not, the platform may automatically charge you in your card’s home currency (AUD), which could trigger DCC and lead to higher costs.
